Centipede Grass

Centipede grass is native to China and Southeast Asia. It was first introduced into the United States circa 1916 from seed collected by Frank N. Meyer in South China. Centipede grass has since become widely grown in the southeastern United States from South Carolina to Florida and westward along the Gulf Coast states and Texas. Well suited for low pH soils, Centipede is a slow-growing grass that needs very little fertilizer. It has a medium to light green color, and many consider it to be the lowest maintenance of the warm season grasses.

Is centipede grass really as low maintenance as it says it is?

Centipede is probably the lowest maintenance of all warm season grasses. Because centipede is "low growing," it does not have to be mowed as often as other types of grass. Centipede is rather drought tolerant, and when healthy, is aggressive enough to choke out weeds and other grasses. It is tolerant of full sun, some shade, and does not need frequent fertilizing.

Should I water my centipede sod daily?

Actively growing centipede grass requires about 1 inch of water per week, either from rainfall or supplemental irrigation. Sandy soils often require more frequent watering (1⁄2 inch of water every third day) if rainfall is insufficient. Proper irrigation helps prevent or reduce problems later in the summer.

When will my lawn be ready to mow?

Mow within 10 days of installation and bag clippings for the first few mowings. New installations are often uneven and care should be taken not to “scalp” any high spots.
